NOBLE COUNTY PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD

MINUTES OF APRIL 27, 2016 MEETING

Present: Ray Scott, John Metzger, Doug Keenan, Kathy Hagen

Guest: Steve Hook, GIS Coordinator; Matt Getts, KPC Media; Gene Lightner

The April 27, 2016 meeting of the Noble County Parks and Recreation Board was called to order at 10:05 AM by President Ray Scott. The minutes of the March 23, 2016 meeting were approved as sent.

Old Business:

Five Year Master Plan. A very informative discussion was held on the Elkhart River and the Canoe/Kayak event, which will be held on Saturday, August 13. Gene Lightner, who works with the Elkhart River Restoration Association, was very helpful in giving insights on clearing the river. Gene has talked with many of the landowners along the Elkhart River, getting permission to cut limbs and clear debris in the river. There is information about the Elkhart River and the restoration work being done at www.elkhartriverrestorationassociation.org .

The Elkhart River Canoeing/Kayaking Event will be held on Saturday, August 13. It was decided that the best option will be to start at Mallard Roost 3 and end at Mallard Roost 1. Steve Hook will identify the addresses for those spots. Kathy Hagen will work on a waiver form for participants. Doug Keenan will check on the availability of a Conservation Officer that morning.

Noble County Parks and Recreation Board Web Site. Steve Hook is hiring a summer intern who will be able to help with the county recreational map and other items related to moving to a new web application. The intern will be starting May 12.

All In Noble County Block Party. It was decided to not have a booth at this activity. The dates for the Take a Stroll Saturdays will be made available on brochures.

Take a Stroll Saturdays. Dates and locations for the “Take A Stroll Saturdays” for 2016 will be:

May 14 – Parkview Noble Hospital.

June 11 – Edna Spurgeon Nature Preserve.

July 9 – Crooked Lake – Canoe, Kayak, or Hike.

August 13 – Elkhart River – Canoe, Kayak or Hike.

September 10 – Chain O Lakes State Park – Canoe, Kayak or Hike.

October 8 – Lonidaw Nature Preserve.

All of these events will begin at 9:00 a.m.

Next meeting – Wednesday, May 25, at 10:00 AM at the Noble County Public Library.
