NOBLE COUNTY PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD

MINUTES OF JULY 27, 2016 MEETING

Present: Ray Scott, Scott Allen, James Haddock, Doug Keenan

Guests: Steve Hook, GIS Coordinator; Dave Gorsuch.

The June 29, 2016 meeting of the Noble County Parks and Recreation Board was called to order at 10:10 AM by President Ray Scott.

The Minutes of the June 29, 2016 meeting were approved as sent.

Old Business:

Future grants were discussed. It was noted that our current five year Master Plan expires in 2019. Ray Scott will contact Bob Bronson from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to see if he would be able to attend a board meeting. Action plans include promotion of trails and cleaning the Elkhart River.

The website is running and is up to date. Steve Hook and the GIS Department have created two new maps, one for Noble County attractions and one for Noble County Restaurants. These links will be added to the Noble County Parks and Recreation Website. The maps can also be found at http://ncgis.nobleco.us/recreation .

Take a Stroll Saturdays. Dates and locations for the “Take A Stroll Saturdays” for 2016 will be:

August 13 – Elkhart River – Canoe, Kayak or Hike. Starting at Mallard Roost 1, 5128 W 750 N.

September 10 – Chain O Lakes State Park – Canoe, Kayak or Hike.

October 8 – Lonidaw Nature Preserve.

All of these events will begin at 9:00 a.m.

There will be a dry run for the Elkhart River canoe and kayak event on Saturday, August 6, 7:00 a.m. beginning at Mallard Roost 1. Dave Gorsuch, John Metzger, Matt Getts and his son will take the run. James Haddock is available if needed. There will be two alternative routes considered for August 13. Both alternatives will begin at Mallard Roost 1.

It would be helpful to have a map of the river available for August 13. We will need to have an article in the newspapers after the dry run is done.

The 1 ¼ mile section of the trail by Gene Stratton Porter has been paved. Progress continues for Noble Trails.

Kathy Hagen has submitted the name of a possible replacement on the Noble County Parks and Recreation Board – Jenny Mawhorter.

Meeting adjourned at 11:15 AM

Next meeting – Wednesday, August 23, at 10:00 AM at the Noble County Public Library.
